My son (Bowen S /Basis Chandler Elementary School) has significantly benefited from Ms. Shen’s Number Sense class. He was a 4th grade student who attended his very first Math League competition in early 2021 and received a score of 29.I was not surprised, as such a score reflected his inadequate training in simple calculations and arithmetic, or “ number sense”. I also realized that, without a robust math foundation, one could not do well for the more challenging questions either. To improve his math skills, my son has attended the number sense class in March 2021 . The class not only provided a systematic training to the students who were preparing the Math League competition, but also helped to build the foundation for more advanced math studies. The students have learned various skills to tackle classic math problems, while the practice questions were provided to further master these skills.
After the class and additional practice, my son attended three more Math League competitions. His number sense scores ranked 3rd place of Grade 4 in the 2021 Math League National Championship and the overall 1st place in the recent Arizona qualifying round. We greatly appreciated the rigorous training provided by this class.

Math used to be an enemy. To me, it was just another unpleasant aspect of life that involved numbers, operations, and rules. A lot of rules.
Before I enrolled in Ms. Shen’s class, I took another online pre-algebra course. It was overwhelming with all the new terms and formulas that I didn’t understand. If I needed to use the restroom, by the time I was back, they had moved on to an entirely different topic than the one before (which, frankly, I was puzzled over as well). I felt as though I asked too many questions, requesting for the teacher to explain the same thing multiple times. Then I began attending Ms. Shen’s math class, taught by Ms. Shen and Ms. Julia. Their pace was much more friendly. In the classes, topics were explained in a way that I wouldn’t forget. During each class, there would always be some things I didn’t understand, so I would stay after class to ask them. Hearing the problems explained again helped me learn more and more math. So far, I have taken pre-algebra, algebra, and semester 1 of AMC8. These classes have helped a lot at school. Since the curriculum is slightly different, at school I was placed into pre-algebra (after nearly getting into algebra). Around halfway through the semester, I realized I had already learned several of the topics covered from Ms. Shen’s classes. Combined with the new things I was learning at school, for the first time, I suddenly felt as though math finally got along with me, At last, the variables were solved for, the numbers computed. I felt like math was finally a subject that I was, well, good at. With the help of Ms. Shen and Ms. Julia, math started being less hostile and more friendly. Without these classes, I would still be struggling in math, but now I not only am getting better at it, but also finding more and more interest in it.

Before I took this class, I wasn’t very good at Number Sense since I didn’t know the tricks. I solved only about 20 problems in the ten minutes, and it felt impossible to get a high score. But Jennie taught me the tricks, one by one, so I could find the secrets of mental math. I got lots of practice from the practice problems in class, the homework, and even past tests. After this, it felt like it was a piece of cake! From 2021-2024, I’ve gotten top 10 in national, 2nd in state for 2021-2022 and 1st for the other two years, and 1st in qualifying each year. I even got a perfect score in the 2023-2024 qualifying round! I cannot thank Jennie enough for how she helped me go from not that good to amazing.

This logic class is important if you want to build up your mathematics skills. It provides excellent examples for you to answer and helps you develop quicker ways to solve similar problems.
After I went to this class, I took the Math Kangaroo competition, which is logic-based, for the first time and got 2nd place in the state. It definitely helped a lot for me in the competition. This class is different from the others because it focuses more on reasonable thinking than on computing equations. Even with some challenging problems, it’s still quite fun.

Ms. Shen’s logic class was very interesting. The problems were so different from those I learned in school. I was curious and willing to figure out answers. The fun of logic pulled me into the world of mathematics. I loved learning the tricks to solve many realistic problems in a faster and smarter way. I believe those thinking processes will benefit me a lot in my other subjects.
In addition, Ms. Shen is a wonderful teacher! Her methods were clear, concise, and very easy to understand. She explained the class materials thoroughly and effectively. The TA sessions also helped if we didn’t grasp the concept. A huge thanks to Ms. Shen for bringing me into the FUN world of math!
